How do I read a tire size like 225/45R17?

225 is the tread width in millimetres, 45 is the aspect ratio (the sidewall height as a percentage of the width), R stands for radial construction and 17 is the rim diameter in inches. The number and letter that often follow, such as 94V, are the load index and the speed rating.

Where do I find my tire size?

It's printed on the sidewall of the tires on your car. The size your vehicle's manufacturer recommends is on the tire placard on the driver's door jamb and in the owner's manual. You can also add your vehicle at the top of this page and we'll mark the sizes that fit it.

Can I put a different tire size on my car?

Only an equivalent size: the overall diameter should stay within about 3% of the original, the rim width must suit the new tire, and the load index and speed rating must be at least equal to the original. When in doubt, follow your vehicle's placard, or add your car to see the sizes confirmed for it.

Do all four tires need to be the same size?

On most vehicles, yes. Some performance cars and trucks use a staggered setup, with wider tires at the rear than at the front. When that's the case, the placard lists both sizes, and the front and rear pairs are bought in their own sizes.

When are winter tires mandatory in Quebec?

From December 1 to March 15, vehicles registered in Quebec must be fitted with winter tires, and only tires marked with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol qualify. Pick your size above, then choose the winter season on its page.
