Snow or ice tires? How to choose the right winter tires for your vehicle?

Banner

There is a myth that you should choose your winter tires according to the vehicle you drive. This is not entirely untrue since the size of the tires must be compatible with the car that will be driving them. But otherwise, it is not the model of the vehicle you drive that should guide your choice of winter tires. To make an informed choice of winter tires, we must first consider our needs, driving style, and travel habits. We suggest that you answer the following questions to determine the type of tires that will best suit you.

Do I drive more often in the city, on country roads or the highway? Do I drive a lot of miles on my winter tires? Do I plan to keep my vehicle for a few more years?

Choose snow tires if

You don't do much driving, and you travel mainly in town and sometimes on secondary roads? A snow tire will suit your needs. While ice tires are generally effective in the city, they are less effective after a heavy snowfall. On the other hand, Snow tires have large blocks and grooves that provide better traction in the snow and efficient slush removal.

Choose ice tires if

If you're on the road a lot and drive mostly on the highway? You're better off with ice tires, which have a specially designed tread pattern that effectively wicks away the thin layer of water that usually covers the ice.

Choose studded tires if

Are you the type of driver who frequently uses back roads? Since they are usually less well plowed, these roads can be hazardous, so studded tires are a good option. Studded tires (also known as studded tires) are a desirable option for people who drive on country roads, which are often covered with snow and ice. However, if quietness is a priority for you, avoid studded tires; they are louder than regular winter tires.

Is it worth it to pay more?

For many people, buying winter tires is a significant investment. But as you know, tires are a crucial part of your vehicle that should not be underestimated at the expense of your safety. If you plan to drive the exact vehicle for a few years, we strongly advise you to choose good quality winter tires. You'll come out ahead, as the higher-end tires offer much better durability. However, if you plan to change your vehicle shortly, there is no point in investing a lot of money in winter tires; they are unlikely to be compatible with your next vehicle.
